PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - An alligator and a goat—who knew that Pittsburgh was animal kingdom?
A family fishing along the Monongahela River saw an alligator sunning itself on Saturday afternoon.
The family called 911 around 1:15 p.m. to report the gator, and, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the news of the gator sighting was believed to be an hoax at first by the Pittsburgh Bureau of Animal Care and Control.
The 10-pound gator was not a joke.
It took off Pittsburgh Bureau of Animal Care and Control officers, Zone 3 police officers, and a Fish and Boat Commission conservation officer over an hour to capture the animal.
The alligator hide from the officers under a fallen tree, causing them to have to dig away at the soil to form an opening to get the gator…with their hands!
Officials believe the alligator was someone's pet and was released into the wild.
And while the gator may have sounded like the height of animal adventures on Saturday, Animal Care and Control Officers were preparing to take the alligator to the Humane Animal Rescue when they received notice that a goat was on Baum Boulevard!
The goat belong to out-of-town visitor who brought the goat from Forest Hills to Pittsburgh.
Both the goat and alligator were captured and are safe. The alligator will remain at the Humane Animal Rescue until they can locate a shelter or refuge for the reptile for relocation.
