Amateur Radio Training To Help During Emergencies

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - An emergency communication training class is being offered to Amateur Radio Emergency Service members on Saturday, February 22 from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m.

The training, held in conjunction with the American Red Cross, will take play at the Red Cross Building at 2801 Liberty Avenue in the Strip District.

The training will help amateur radio operators when the Red Cross is involved in an emergency.

“When disaster strikes and the commercial telecommunications infrastructure has been disrupted, we look to our ARES partner to provide emergency radio communications for our personnel”, says Dave Herzog, American Red Cross Greater Pennsylvania Region Emergency Communications Lead. “Having the ability to communicate quickly and efficiently during a disaster response is critical to providing timely and effective assistance to the communities impacted.” The ARES Emergency Coordinator for Allegheny County,

ARES is made up of licensed amateur radio operators who use their equipment and volunteer to provide communication for the Red Cross.

ARES also helps with communications for events like the Pittsburgh Marathon and Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.
