PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Amazon wants to help its employees start their own delivery companies, while cutting its employee costs at the same time.

Amazon is announcing expansion of its Delivery Service Partner program, targeting current employees who would get an incentive to quit their jobs and start their own Amazon delivery company.

Amanda Ipp tells KDKA Radio’s John Shumway, “This new incentive will fund start-up cost up to $10,000 as well as providing the equivalent of three months of a former employee’s salary.”

She adds it’s not an effort to cut payroll.

“Amazon has a long history of creating programs that empower employees to purse their career aspirations.”

But Reuters reports Amazon is increasingly using robots to replace warehouse employees who box items for delivery.

The move comes as Amazon seeks to cut shipping time from two days to one for Prime customers. Amazon employs more than 500 people at a sortation center in Fairywood and recently opened a distribution center in Aleppo.
