PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is set to close all locations at the end of the day on Saturday, March 14 due to the Coronavirus crisis.
Despite having no documented reports of staff or patrons being exposed to the virus, the system of 19 locations will remain closed through March 31st.
"It is with a heavy heart that we need to take the extraordinary step of closing to the public," said Mary Frances Cooper, president & director of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. "We understand the impact this decision has on our community. In the interest of our public's health we cannot in good faith maintain the cleaning routine and enforce the social distancing necessary to combat the spread of this virus."
Staff are expected to report to their locations to help determine how the libraries can serve the community during the crisis.
The borrowing policy is also being relaxed during this time as due dates are extended and late fees suspended.
