PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Dr. Mike Hutchinson, veterinarian and owner of the Animal General in Cranberry, joined KDKA Radio on Thursday to answer some animal questions.
These are the questions that he was asked:
Are Gobbler turkeys dangerous in the spring mating season? Do they transmit Rabies?
“The gobblers themselves aren’t dangerous, they are afraid of people, so they will generally run from us. They have very good eyesight and they won’t get anywhere near us in mating season,” Dr. Mike said.
“As far as getting rabies, birds don’t get rabies.”
Our Terrier-cross has been on a steroid for Addison’s disease for 3 years now. Recently she has become lethargic and occasionally she vomits. Do you think it is possible that she is becoming resistant to the treatment?
“During that disease process we often times have to adjust the medication. I wouldn’t say resistant because usually if we change the doses, they respond really well. Your veterinarian will help you do that,” Dr. Mike explains.
“I just think it needs an adjusted dose.”
Our 2-year-old, indoor-only cat was recently diagnosed with Leukemia. Our veterinarian said a virus from outdoor cats causes this disease. Can you explain how this happened? Will stem cells help her?
“It doesn’t necessarily have to come from an outdoor cat, it could have come from the mother; if they didn’t test that kitten when it was young, maybe that virus was there and now it’s just starting to become active,” Dr. Mike added.
“We do not have any cure for this. We can try treatments through secondary infections. I do not have a stem cell treatment for this unfortunately.”
