City Officials Still Prepared For Diminished St. Paddy's Day Celebration

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Even with no parade, Pittsburgh Public Safety officials are preparing for large localized crowds celebrating St Patrick's Day.

In a statement, Public safety Director Wendell Hissrich says they anticipate smaller crowds but will still be on patrol.

"With COVID-19 and the cancellation of the parade, we anticipate lighter crowds than years past," Hissrich said. "But we will still maintain a zero tolerance policy for disruptive and illegal behavior. Underage drinking and drinking and driving in particular will be targeted. We want people to enjoy themselves, but to do so responsibly."

Bars are told to strictly observe occupancy limits to help with social distancing with the coronavirus threat.

"If they are one person over, the bar will be shut down for the remainder of the evening," said Hissrich.

Partiers are told not to share drinks and wash hands frequently. State, city, and County mounted patrols will be joined by undercover officers as well as River Rescue.
