PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Gun right supporters are expected to turn out in the hundreds Monday at noon in downtown Pittsburgh to protest legislation before City Council to ban semi-automatic weapons.
In an interview with KDKA Radio, council member Corey O'Connor says: "we're not taking away your guns."
“We’re putting in preventive laws that make it safer . . . realistically no reason why certain individuals need automatic weapons,” said O’Connor.
Another measure would allow the city to temporarily hold the firearms of someone considered an "extreme risk."
O'Connor explained that proposal to KDKA Radio's Larry Richert and John Shumway.
“They’re have to go through a judge I mean there is a lengthy process. You’re just holding it for a time period so that that individual would get their behavior back to normal and then they would be granted the weapon back through a court process.”
Another measure would ban certain types of ammunition.
O’Connor adds, “there’s realistically no reason certain individuals need semi-automatic weapons."
A final vote on that ban and the two other gun control measures is expected in about a month.
The event at the City-County building is also expected to draw counter protestors.
Police will be there to separate the demonstrators.
