PA Dept of Health Partners with Pitt for Education, Training for First Responders in the Opioid Epidemic

HARRISBURG, Pa (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Pennsylvania Department of Health is teaming up with the University of Pittsburgh education and training for first responders across the state.

The training will be related to drug use and its treatments.


"The opioid epidemic continues to impact many Pennsylvanians across the state. This is why it is so important that we continue to provide the proper resources to those responding to this epidemic so we can keep our residents safe and create a healthy Pennsylvania for all," said Heath Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine.

Pitt will receive $2.8 million in funds from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA) First Responders-Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act. The money will be used opioid epidemic response training.

In addition to Pitt, the state will also work with Saint Joseph's University, which has been granted $1.2 million.

Training is free for first responders and public safety professionals who are in contact with those who need help.

Secretary Levine said, "We are excited to partner with Saint Joseph's University and the University of Pittsburgh to provide vital education and training to those responding to the opioid epidemic."
