PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Four local Giant Eagle locations are no longer open 24 hours a day.
Starting this past Sunday, the Monroeville, Ross Township, Shaler and South Strabane locations are no longer be open in the middle of the night.
Those locations will be closed from 1 a.m. till 5 a.m.
Dick Roberts, who represents Giant Eagle told KDKA Radio in a statement, ” We review shopping trends on an ongoing basis to ensure that we make our Team Members, products and services available during the times of the day that matter most to our customers. As Giant Eagle and other grocers have seen overnight customer traffic decrease in recent years, today the majority of our supermarkets operate during hours between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m.”
Giant Eagle Spokesperson Dan Donovan tells KDKA Radio’s Lynne Hayes-Freeland the decision is not a drastic one.

Of the 60 Pittsburgh area Giant Eagle stores, fewer than 10 are now open 24 hours a day.
“This is a continuation of really following those customer shopping trends and that making sure that we have our stores and more importantly have our team members available in our stores at the times when we see customers most often,” said Donovan.
Donovan adds over the past five to ten years, shopping trends have changed, pointing to the popularity of online shopping and having your groceries delivered to you, along with Curbside Pickup.
He also says places like Giant Eagle owned Get Go and Sheetz convenience stores are making it easy for people to get items they need late at night.
“While you can’t do a full shop admittedly, you can get a lot of those staples that you’ve come to find in a grocery whenever you like and a lot of our Get Go locations are open 24 hours,” said Donovan.
