PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto Monday outlined guidelines for safe autonomous vehicle testing in the city.

The "Pittsburgh Principles" were created through executive order.

The private-public partnership seeks to increase transparency and safety during development, and promotes decreasing emissions.

The five companies currently developing self-driving vehicles locally joined Peduto for the announcement at the David Lawrence Convention Center

City Department of Mobility and Infrastructure Director Karina Ricks tells KDKA Radio the voluntary guidelines govern testing in the city.

“How are we going to have transparency between us? How are we going to have regular communications? How are we going to respond in the case of any safety breaches that go on?” asked Ricks.

The principles were developed following a fatal pedestrian accident involving a self-driving Uber vehicle in Arizona last year.

Uber is participating along with Aptiv, Argo AI, Aurora Innovation, and  Carnegie-Mellon University.
