PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A Pennsylvania House Representative is hoping to help with the profound lack of sports officials across the state with a new bill that would make it illegal to harass a referee during a school sporting event.
Anita Kulik highlighted some the problems referees face with KDKA Radio's Lynne Hayes Freeland:
“Not only do you see physical assault of officials but there’s really no need to look at someone and say ‘hey I know where you live ref, I’m going to get you out in the parking lot’,” said Kulik.

If the bill were to become law, the harassment of a referee would be a third-degree misdemeanor.
“Too often we are now seeing people getting in the faces of the officials and threatening them, there’s a lot of officials that after some games need to have police escorts to their vehicles,” said Kulik.
