PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Bank robberies are on the rise locally, and the FBI is blaming the opioid crisis.
There have been 28 bank robberies in the region [western Pennsylvania and West Virginia] in the last four months compared to 39 in the prior fiscal year.
Special agent Glen Galeone says they are also seeing more groups committing the robberies, instead of just one offender.
“This has obviously contributed in large part to the increase in bank robberies we’ve seen, the number of bank robberies as well as the amount of money taken from banks in these bank robberies.
He says most of those caught admit to having a drug dependency which fueled the robberies.
