PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - "If you go into traffic and you know it's going to be traffic, you're more prepared for it. If you say there's not going to be any traffic, you're not going to be prepared for it," said Psychiatrist Dr. Christian Conte during an interview with KDKA Radio on Tuesday.
This is the approach that you want to take on Thanksgiving. You most likely know what kind of ideologies your family members have, so set your expectations.
"This is my key advice this year. Don't try to fix your family; instead, go there and observe them, watch them, listen to them," Dr. Conte explains.
You do not need to change someone's beliefs. Love and appreciate them for who they are.
"There's beautiful aspects to gathering with your family, what if you concentrate on that?" Dr. Conte adds.
"You don't have to fix anyone, you can be with them, you can be around them and near them - and love them."
