PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Two days after three mask-free zones were introduced at Kennywood, the amusement park has removed the areas after receiving backlash over the policy.

Kennywood spokesperson Nick Paradise told the Post-Gazette, the policy was overshadowing the reopening of the park, which began welcoming the general public on Monday after operating for season Passholders over the weekend.

Masks are required to be worn for all guests at Kennywood during their visit with the exception of water rides and while eating.

Temperature checks are also conducted at the entrance and various other safety protocols are in effect as well.

Kennywood, along with Sandcastle and Idlewild Parks have reopened after a two-month delay due to the worldwide pandemic.

Kennywood is currently operating at a reduced capacity and Paradise told KDKA Radio last week that the number of people allowed in the park at a time may change as they study safety measures in place.

The mask-free zones were located near the Windmill, the Garden Stage and Pavilion 16 near Kiddieland. The areas were socially distanced and aimed at giving people a brief break from wearing a mask.

Visitors to Kennywood, Sandcastle and Idlewild are asked to go online to book their visit.

Walkups are available at Kennywood, but if the park has reached its predetermined capacity, visitors will not be allowed entrance.
