PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A lawsuit has been filed that alleges several Chipotle restaurants in the Pittsburgh area are keeping the change instead of returning it to customers.
This comes amid a nationwide coin shortage due to the pandemic with many companies asking customers to use a card when possible.
Example of people not getting the change they were entitled to include the chain’s Pine Township and Hampton locations.
Attorney Frank Salpietro tells KDKA Radio’s Lynne Hayes Freeland he doesn’t believe the company has the right to do that.
The lawsuit filed by Salpietro says that hundreds of thousands of dollars have been taken out of consumer’s pockets.
“Chipotle has taken the position apparently to this point that they’d rather keep the money than give it back to the community or back to the customer, some of whom desperately need that money,” said Salpietro.
Salpietro says two young women approached him after they saw posts on social media and investigated themselves and witnessed change not being returned to customers.
Lower income, college students and other people that don’t have access to a credit or debit card are being hit the hardest, according to Salpietro.
The suspicion is that the practice is happening in all 96 Chipotle locations across Pennsylvania.
Salpietro says that many other companies are rounding up the change giving the customer the benefit of the doubt and Chipotle should either do that or credit the customer for a future purchase.
The lawsuit is a class-action suit and Salpietro encourages if it has happened to you to save your receipt and contact his law office.
He says he has already been contacted by several people claiming they are not getting the proper change returned after a purchase.
