Legislation To Ban Use of Facial Recognition Software By Pittsburgh Police Introduced in City Council

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Legislation to regulate the use of facial recognition and other predictive policing tactics has been introduced in Pittsburgh City Council.

The city reportedly does not currently have facial recognition technology. The bill introduced by councilman Corey O'Connor would require council approval before it could ever be used.

Pittsburgh's Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich is unhappy with the proposal. He said, "Having to go through a chain of events to try to be able to use that technology presents a problem."

Hissrich said the technology needs to be used in real time. "The way the legislation is laid out, I have some serious concerns about the effects it will have on law enforcement within the city."

Hissrich and Police Chief Scott Schubert are scheduled to meet with council members Thursday.
