Most people will try to give up beer for lent, but Ohio native Del Hall gave up everything except beer (and water) for the 40 day period before Easter.
When we last talked to Hall on March 18, the director of sales for Fifty West Brewing Company in Cincinnati had lost 20 pounds. On Friday April 5, his total weight loss is up to 33.5 pounds.
Hall tells KDKA Radio, “I thought going into this I might lose 30-35 pounds over the whole course (of lent) so I still have over two weeks left and I’m already down 33 pounds.”
Hall says he got the idea while studying beer and learning about a particular brew called “doppelbock”, a beer that was first brewed by monks in the 1600s.
“When you study “doppelbock” you learn that the monks invented this style of beer to sustain them when the decided in 1654 to give up all solid food for lent so when they decided to do that they brewed a hardy style of beer with extra carbohydrates and extra calories to sustain them so I just decided I’m going to give it a whirl and see if this is actually fact or fiction,” said Hall.
Hall says he hasn’t been exercising but feels great.
“I feel like I have a lot of energy, I’m 43 I feel like I’m in my 20s again,” said Hall. “Even my hair and nails are growing super-fast.”
Hall admits while he feels great he isn’t going to go out and start running and exercising.
A recent checkup with his doctor (he’s been frequently visiting a medical professional during the process) showed his cholesterol and blood sugar have gone down.
“My blood pressure went down, everything’s improved.”
The man who has already been featured on over 500 news outlets in 35 countries has two weeks left and he thinks they will be the hardest because he will be traveling.
“I’ll be in Denver and Atlanta and I think traveling will make a new hurdle.”
