PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) -  Downtown Pittsburgh is expected to get crowded on Friday night  as people arrive for Light Up Night festivities.

In fact, the lights are the key for security and safety during the event.

City Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich told KDKA Radio’s Joe DeStio that they will be using portable lights for safety.

“You will see increased lights for Light Up Night compared to the 4th of July,” Hissrich said. “[We’re] almost tripling the amount of light towers throughout the city.”

The Department of Public Safety said in a release that Pittsburgh Police will be joined by the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, Allegheny County Police, Pennsylvania State Police, Port Authority Police and State Park Rangers throughout the event. Officers will be in uniform and plain clothes.

River Rescue, the Fire Boat, Pittsburgh EMS, Pittsburgh Fire and Emergency Management and mounted police units will be present throughout the evening.

Hissrich told DeStio that police will be visible and invisible throughout the event’s duration.

“We will of course have officers at high vantage points,” Hissrich said. “We will have the state police helicopter up and there will be a lot of intel agents scattered using cameras. Our security cameras through the city will be fully operational as well.”

The Department of Public Safety also asked residents to remember that that drones and illegal weapons are not allowed.
