MORGANTOWN (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) -- West Virginia University pushed back its start date by one week as the school introduces a phased returned to campus.
In a letter to the students, University President E. Gordon Gee outlined the new changes to the 2020 fall semester.
Classes will now begin on Wednesday, August 26thwith a combination of in-person and online.
Certain programs will have alternative start dates, allowing for reduced number of students on-campus while allowing students to have the college experience.
The majority of upper-division undergraduate courses will be online or hybrid, while classes that require laboratory time may be offered face-to-face depending on academic program.
The main focus will be on graduating seniors so that they complete the courses needed to graduate.
A final academic schedule will be released around Wednesday, August 5th.
Students moving onto campus are also being delayed one week, with the new move-in date being Saturday, August 22nd. If a student cannot change their move-in date, the University will work with them to accommodate their schedule.
The Beckley (WVU Tech) and Keyser (WVU Potomac State College) are set to return to campus as planned, on August 19th.
“Each of you has a vision of what university life should be, as do I. As much as I want everyone back on campus, I know this is the right decision. And it was made based on what is needed for our campus at this moment in time. Other universities are facing similar decisions and will do what is right for them. There is no one correct answer or perfect reopening plan. We must each do what is in the best interest of our community,” President Gee wrote.
“Though COVID-19 has created much chaos in our lives, there is one thing I know for certain: We are family at West Virginia University. We take care of each other. We support each other. And we will do the right thing when it is asked of us.”
