PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Pennsylvania Game Commission needs your help in figuring out the state's deer population during July and August.

Just go online and fill out a survey after spotting one.

"We're asking people to give us their sightings because we're trying to determine what the production was, what the reproduction is this particular year," said Mary Jo Casalena, Wild Turkey Biologist for the Pennsylvania Game Commission, during an interview with the KDKA Radio Morning Show on Friday.

The reproductive rate helps the game commission determine what the fall season population will be like one year from now. It also helps predict the fall harvest.

"What we're really interested in is if that number has changed from the last time that you counted," Casalena explains.

Right now there are about 220,000-230,000 turkey's in the state. It's not as high as the boom back in 2001 - when there were over 280,000 turkeys in the commonwealth.
