HARRISBURG, Pa (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - State lawmakers in the House passed a bill that would update Pennsylvania's vehicle code with a change for drivers with a Commercial Drivers License.
The legislation by Representative Lori Mizgorski would require CDL holders to notify employers within 30 days of being arrested, cited or charged with a non-parking traffic violations.
"This legislation came about when I learned of a tractor-trailer driver who caused two fatal accidents within six months. By the time this individual was convicted of careless driving for the first accident in Pennsylvania, he had already caused a second fatal accident in Ohio," Mizgorski said in a release.
"Every day, thousands of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians travel on roads across Pennsylvania, and we all share the responsibility of keeping our roadways safe," said Mizgorski. "For those who hold commercial driver’s licenses, there is a greater responsibility to drive safely because of the greater size and weight of commercial vehicles. It is my hope that this legislation will encourage safer conditions on our roads."
If a driver fails to make the necessary notification it could result in fines up to $400 depending on the nature of the infraction.
The bill now moves onto the Senate for consideration.
