PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Pennsylvania joins 14 other states, Washington D.C. and New York City in a lawsuit against the Trump Administration's proposal to cut nutrition assistance.

Attorney General Josh Shapiro says the change would prevent states from extending SNAP benefits, or food stamps, for 700,000 Americans, including Pennsylvanians.

“80,000 individuals, from Cambria to Philadelphia counties, will be affected by this rule,” said Attorney General Josh Shapiro. “The rule punishes people in both rural and urban communities just because there aren’t always enough jobs. People already suffer when jobs disappear—needlessly taking away access to food only punishes them further. I’m proud to stand with my colleague Attorneys General to defend all Pennsylvanians from this cruel and illegal effort.”

The suit alleges the USDA violated federal rule making policies, and the rule would pose significant regulatory burdens.
