HARRISBURG, Pa (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Pennsylvania's unemployment rate rose to 13.7 percent in July, up one-half a percentage point compared to June.
The national rate dropped by nearly one percent down to 10.2 percent for the month.
The PA Department of Labor & Industry said nonfarm jobs in the state increased by 97,900 bringing July's total to more than 5.5 million. Year-over-year, nonfarm jobs were down 541,900.
Over half of that job increase came from the leisure & hospitality industry, which was also the same area that saw the largest decline with nearly 168,000 jobs lost.
Year-over-year, the state's unemployment rate increased by 9.3 percent. The national rate by 6.5 percent.
