HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - There is a new problem for Pennsylvania’s unemployment compensation system, fraud.

Labor and Industry officials spotted the fraut over the weekend after seeing in in other states.

Scammers use stolen identities to file for unemployment claims and direct payment to their bank accounts.

L and I Executive Director Jerry Oleksiak says questionable claims must be held up while they are confirmed.

“We anticipate a very low number of valid claim payments be held up as a result of these anti-fraud efforts,” said Oleksiak.

Oleksiak adds there was not breach of L and I records. The personal information was stolen elsewhere.

No word yet on how much money was been paid out to fraudsters
