HARRISBURG, PA (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, has announced that Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement mandates will go into effect on Monday, March 9.
The AWZSE program just wrapped up a 60-day pre-enforcement period on March 4.
The pre-enforcement period is a requirement of establishing a AWZSE area.
The AWZSE utilizes systems to measure and keep track of a motorist's speed.
Those systems will use electronic speed-capturing devices that will specifically take note of speeds that exceed the speed limit by 11 miles per hour.
Drivers will receive a written warning in the mail on their first offense. On the second offense, drivers will receive a citation for $75. For third offense and beyond, citations will cost $150. The violations are civil only. They won't cause any point demerits on one' driving record.
Drivers will not be going into the work zones blind, though.
Signage will be posted well in advance of the enforcement zone.
Hopes are that the installation of the statewide AWZSE program and its areas will help slow down traffic for ever-changing construction conditions and promote safety for laborers in the work zones.
"Through the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program, we are urging motorists to slow down and pay attention while driving, especially through work zones where roadway conditions can change on a daily basis," said acting PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian. "In 2018, 23 motorists were killed in a Pennsylvania work zone. Ultimately, this program is not about issuing violations, it's about saving lives."
