HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - PennDOT has announced that existing photos will be used for customers who renew their driver’s license and ID card.
“Using a customer’s existing photo will help limit the number of people in our driver and photo license centers, and by extension, help reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19,” said Acting PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian. “This new process is not only a convenience, but it will help to keep our customers and staff safe."
All customers who renew their license or photo ID online or through the mail will get a new card that uses the most recent photo that exists in PennDOT’s system.
Camera cards will not be issued to those customers and will get their new card by mail within 15 days.
Anyone who renewed their license or ID before May 10 will get a camera card in the mail and will still need to go into a Photo License Center to get a new photo taken.
Non-U.S. citizens must visit a driver’s license center in person.
Driver’s licenses, photo ID card, learner’s permits and camera cards that were schedule to expire anywhere from March 16 – May 31, 2020 have now been extended until June 30, 2020.
Those who were planning on getting a REAL ID will have to wait until issuances are resumed.
REAL ID issuances are currently suspended during the coronavirus pandemic.
Once REAL ID resumes, people will be able to update their non-REAL ID card.
Customers won’t lose any time that they’ve already paid for and the new card will include time remaining on the current card with an additional four years.
Visit PennDOT’s website if you need to renew your ID.
