PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - With many school districts still working on plans for the new year, one program is seeing a huge spike in interest.
In its 20 years, Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School has never seen so much interest and new enrollments.
CEO Brian Hayden says its pandemic driven.
“We’re receiving over 1,000 inquiries a week, in fact we’ve had to redeploy about 40 employees to help our enrollment services people just so we can try to process them as quickly as we can,” said Hayden.
Hayden adds a large number of those being enrolled are younger students with parents concerned about then having to wear a mask all day in a classroom.
He says parents are worried about safety and some were frustrated with how traditional schools handled online learning in the spring.
Another reason for the increase is parents want consistency, according to Hayden.
A key requirement for Cyber School is that an adult has to be home with the student during the school day. That is not an option for all families.
