PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – A new report gives Pennsylvania a failing grade for keeping lead out of schools' water supplies.

The study by Penn Environment gives Pennsylvania an F saying most districts don’t even test for lead.

Allegheny County Health Department Director Dr. Karen Hacker calls on parents to speak up.

“A long time has passed and it’s time that Pennsylvanian’s woke up to the fact that we are surrounded by lead and whole varieties of our issues of infrastructure recognize that and protect our children.”

Legislation now in the state house would require schools to test, disclose the results and lower the standard from 15 to 5 parts per billion. That’s the same standard as for bottled water.

Ashleigh Deemer with Penn Environment says, “Most parents would be shocked to know that most schools are not required to test their drinking water for lead.”

The bill has the support of organizations like the state PTA, Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers Union and the Allegheny County Health Department.
