PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - New Port Authority buses featuring a USB port under seats for charging electronic devices started hitting the street last month.
Now, riders will have access to free Wi-Fi.
Port Authority CEO Katharine Kelleman announced Monday that over 400 buses now have access to Wi-Fi.
The remainder of the bus fleet and all light rail vehicles will have wireless internet by early next year.
“We’re excited to be able to make investments like this that improve our customer's comfort and riding experience,” Kelleman said. “Free Wi-Fi will better connect passengers who are on-the-go and start to bring our system into the future."The project is part of a $2.4 million modem upgrade.
The signal is as fast as 4G LTE, which means you’ll be able to surf the web and check email, but probably won’t be able to download large files
To log on to the network, riders need to select “PAAC WIFI."
No password is required, but customers will need to accept the Terms and Conditions of Use. There is no limit on time usage.
Port Authority also has some helpful tip for those who use the Wi-Fi.• If you're unable to see the “PAAC WIFI” network, make sure your device is Wi-Fi-enabled and Wi-Fi is turned on. • Please be courteous and avoid downloading large files.• If you're watching video or listening to audio, please use earbuds or headphones and be considerate of your fellow riders.
