Protesters Walk Down West Liberty Avenue In Beechview For Sit-In At Liberty Tubes

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Between 200-400 people gathered outside the McDonalds on West Liberty Avenue Friday afternoon in Beechview to protest the death of George Floyd while in police custody.

It is the 7th straight day of protests in the area.

Protest organizers and police worked together and local businesses have allowed peaceful protesters to park in their spaces.

The protesters will walk from West Liberty Avenue to the Liberty Tunnel for a sit-in.

Members of the Pittsburgh Baptist Church were on hand to hand out water to those who needed it.

At one point, the crowd stop to allow others in the back to catch up.

The group also sang happy birthday to Breonna Taylor, who was shot to death in her home by Louisville Police in a botched raid.

Four Police cruisers followed the back of the group slowly to keep it safe for protesters.

One man was yelling a protesters telling them to go home.

The protesters made it to the Liberty Tunnels and held a sit-in before heading back up West Liberty.

Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert also joined and took a knee with protesters.

Earlier on Friday, Demonstrators gathered in Bloomfield protesting against police brutality and institutional racism.

That started at Friendship Park around noon. At that same time UPMC healthcare workers knelt outside various hospital for 8 minutes and 46 seconds to honor George Floyd.
