PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Allegheny County says the most recent numbers show improving air quality, despite a negative State of the Air report last week by the American Lung Association
That State of the Air report used 2015 thru 2017 data. But the county health department says 2018 numbers for particulates at the Liberty monitor near Clairton met the EPA 24 hour and annual standards for the first time.
The announcement comes as Pennsylvania joins the US Climate Alliance, Governor Tom Wolf told KDKA Radio Tuesday, “We’ve got to do stuff that recognizes climate change and the consequences of not doing something is just terrible.”
The health department credits stronger enforcement, fines and penalties. Also this week, Pennsylvania became the 23rd state to join the US Climate Alliance.
Wolf a strong economy and clean air can happen together.
“Actually they’re not competing,” said Wolf. “We can work together to make sure we have clean air and a really healthy economy.”
