PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Pittsburgh Park Conservancy is backing a fall referendum asking city voters if they’ll support a half mill hike in the property tax to fund 160 neighborhood parks.
The hike in the tax would raise about $10 million dollars.
While all agree the parks need help City Controller Michael Lamb told City Council the timing is bad that that they want to see large non-profits donate first
“I think it’s unconscionable for us to go to our residents and ask for a tax increase when our largest employers, our large nonprofits are contributing zero,” said Lamb.
Conservancy CEO Jane Miller says neighborhood parks lack the funding and resources devoted to the large regional parks.
Mayor Bill Peduto supports the referendum.
