PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - What does it take for a garbage can to be smart?

How about when it can tell you when it’s full without anyone opening the lid.

The city of Pittsburgh has placed about a thousand so-called smart trash cans in public places.

They send a wireless signal to Public Works when they're full.

City officials say workers spend about 100,000 hours a year dumping trash cans and the new hi-tech cans will save them time allowing workers to focus on other jobs such as pothole patching, garbage clean up as well as weeding and clearing debris.

The city spent $670,000 on new cans and new lids with sensors for existing cans.
