PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Women over 50 who drink two or more diet drinks a day are at increased risk of stroke.

That's according to a study out of the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, led by Dr. Yasmin Mossavar-Rahmani.

She tells KDKA Radio's Lynne Hayes-Freeland subjects were 23 percent more likely to have a stroke, and 31 percent more likely to have a stroke cause by a clot.

“We also found that obese women without previous heart disease or diabetes were twice as likely to have this clot cause stroke and African American women without a history of heart disease or diabetes were about four times as likely,” said Dr. Mossavar-Rahmani.

The high consumption group was also 29 percent more likely to develop heart disease and 16 percent more likely to die from any cause.
