PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Downtown Pittsburgh is getting a major national retailer.
Target is planning on opening a location on the first floor of the famous old Kaufmann’s/Macy’s building at the corner of Smithfield Street and Fifth Avenue, according to the Post-Gazette.
A spokesperson for Target tells KDKA Radio: "I can confirm Target has plans to open new a store in Pittsburgh. We're excited to bring an easy, convenient shopping experience to additional guests in the community with this new Target store. Located at 400 5th Ave. the store will be approximately 22,000 square feet. As we get closer to opening the store, we'll have more specific details to share - including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date."
Core Realty purchased the buliding in 2015.
Reports says the Target store downtown will be smaller than the one in East Liberty or other locations found in more suburban locations.
The Kaufmann’s location was built in 1877 and was expanded numerous times over the years and features the historic Kaufmann’s clock.
The 1.2 million square feet building also features 311 residential units, the EVEN brand hotel, rooftop restaurant, pool and tennis courts, along with 50,000 square feet of office space.
The downtown Target location is expected to open sometime next year.
