AccuWeather's Heath Zehr told KDKA Radio that several factors brought the storm to us. "This is a system that had been working its way eastward. We've had actually just quite a bit of energy in the atmosphere in general between Laura off to the southwest, a front that has been stalled across to the north, pieces of energy coming eastward along it. And that was what lead to the issues that we had during the day yesterday," she explained. "We had wind damage reports, pretty much all across Pennsylvania, but here in Western Pennsylvania is where they were really most concentrated. Fortuantely, that energy is now off to the east of us. In fact it is pushing off the eastern seaboard this morning."
Zehr said severe weather that could hit the Great Lakes region today has some concern for bringing strong storms to our region, but she said it will probably stay to the north of us.
Allegheny County Parks had to close Boyce Park in Monroeville so crews could clean up downed trees.
As of 8:45 p.m. on Friday, there are still a little over 2,000 people without power in the Pittsburgh area.
