PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Rough weather overnight produced tens of thousands of power outages in the Pittsburgh region.
Severe thunderstorms moved through the area after midnight with hail and wind gusts around 60 miles per hour followed by heavy rain and even possible tornado touchdowns.
The roof of St. Mary’s Church in New Kensington was partially ripped off overnight by high winds and the National Weather Service suspects a tornado touched down in New Kensington during the severe weather.
Social media posts from other areas show possible tornados in the Neville Island/Robinson area and also Tarentum.
Winds of 75 mph were recorded at Pittsburgh International at 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, the highest ever recorded.
In Latrobe, hangers and planes were heavily damaged at the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport
As of 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 44,808 people were without power.
26,717 Duquesne Light customers are offline with the majority of outages in Pittsburgh and Sewickley.
Center,Glassport and Robinson are reporting hundreds of outages.
West Penn Power is reporting outages in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland Counties.
