PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - With single-digit temperatures in the forecast the next two days, frozen pipes are a major concern.
Plumber Frank Rezzetano joined KDKA Radio on Tuesday to share some tips on how to prevent that from happening.
Here are a few preventative measures that Rezzetano suggests homeowners to take:
- Turn thermostat 2-3 degrees higher than normal.
- Any sinks that are on an outside wall, leave the cabinets open (make sure kids and pets can’t access chemical in those cabinets.
- If you have a finished basement with a drop ceiling, take several tiles out. That allows warmer air to get in there.
- Make sure outside spigots are turned off and drained.
- Do not let hot water drip from your faucet. Rezzetano says that hot water actually freezes faster than cold water
- It usually takes 2-3 days of the deep cold to cause damage. Temperatures are expected to increase by the weekend.
