PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - With trees blooming, allergy sufferers are filling doctor's waiting rooms.

Dr. Deborah Gentile who directs the Allergy and Asthma program at East Suburban Pediatrics tells KDKA Radio it is peak tree pollen season.

“This past week I’ve been very busy,” said Gentile. “Everyone I’ve seen so far today basically has had a really rough last week and weekend with eyes swollen, severe congestion.”

Congestion, sneezing, even breathing problems are the most common symptoms.

“Just as you see the beautiful trees blooming, the trees are also releasing pollen and if you’re allergic it can cause serious symptoms with eye-itching, watering, redness,” said Gentile.

Right now we're seeing problems with Oak, Birch, and Mulberry, but it doesn't help to eliminate the tree. Pollen can travel up to 30 miles.

Gentile recommends an allergy shot for people with severe reactions and has tips for things you can do before you can get to the doctor.

“A few you can do right now if you’re suffering are over the counter Antihistamine and even over the counter eye drops or nasal steroid sprays.”

Mold spores have also been high because of all the rain. Tree pollen season ends in a couple of weeks, followed quickly by grass pollen season.
