HARRISBURG (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — UnitedHealthcare fined $1 million after a state report found the company violated federal law that protects those with mental health disorders.

From January 2015 through March 2016, the Pennsylvania Insurance Department's market conduct examination report found "extensive non-compliance" with laws that require mental health and substance abuse benefits be comparable to medical coverage.

The report also found miscalculated out-of-pocket costs for autism claims, and delayed claim payments and complaint responses.

UnitedHealthcare will pay restitution including interest to impacted consumers, and spend an additional $800,000 on a public outreach campaign.

All major insurers in Pennsylvania are undergoing similar evaluations.
