PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Ground was broken today on what UPMC CEO Jeffrey Romoff calls, "the largest presence of American-style academic medicine outside of the United States."
This first hospital in the city of Chengdu, a city of more than 18 million people, will be managed by UPMC and financed the the Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group.
A statement says UPMC will hire key hospital leaders including the chief executive officer and chief nursing officer. UPMC will train staff in China and Pittsburgh and qualified Chengdu Wanda physicians may be considered for adjunct faculty posts at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
UPMC International president Charles Bogosta who also heads the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center says, "this first hospital in Chengdu will fill a gap for state-of-the-art, patient focused care in Western China."
Chengdu Wanda-UPMC International Hospital will to open in 2022 and is expected to be the first in a string of hospitals across China.
