PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - There's a new twist regarding billing practices in the ongoing dispute between UPMC and Highmark.

The two health care giants will part ways June 30th when the consent decree between them ends.

UPMC previously announced it would then require pre-payment from any Highmark-insured patients that seek emergency or specialty care, but Wednesday, reversed that decision, informing the state insurance department it will instead bill Highmark directly.

UPMC Communications Director Paul Wood tells KDKA Radio, "This is more than fair and takes their member out of the middle."

"UPMC will bill Highmark directly and expects prompt and standard payment at the Medicare fee schedule amounts and at the same contract rates that UPMC Health Plan currently pays Highmark's Allegheny Health Network hospitals for emergency care," said Wood.

He says UPMC will charge Highmark at the same rate Highmark charges them for ER visits.
