Watch: Vice President Pence Meets with Pittsburgh Community, Religious Leaders

PITSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Vice President Mike Pence met with religious and community leaders Friday at Covenant Church of Pittsburgh in Wilksinsburg.

Also in attendance at the meeting were Senator Pat Toomey, retired Judge Cheryl Allen, (Pennsylvania Superior Court), Bishop Joseph Garlington (pastor at the Covenant Church of Pittsburgh), Reverend James Nelson (law enforcement officers and reverend) and Pastor Ross Owens (Allegheny Alliance Church) and Lenny McAllister (Director of the Commonwealth Foundation).

Scott Turner, Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, helped lead the conversation.

Pence told the audience and the panel on stage, "I’m looking forward, as I know Senator Toomey is, to gaining your insights about how we — we continue to move our nation forward in the aftermath of the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.  I mean, there was no excuse for what happened to George Floyd.  And President Trump has made it clear that justice will be served.

"I know I speak for people across this country when I say there’s also no excuse for the violence and the rioting and the looting that took place here in the Pittsburgh area and all across the country.  And we commend the leadership at the national level and state and local level and our law enforcement community that quelled that violence and allowed the peaceful protests to continue."

Lenny McAllister joined Lynne Hayes-Freeland and Robert Mangino to discuss his experience at the meeting. "One of the things I appreciated about that was, there was an opportunity to build connections and talk about real policies," said McAllister.
