PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Students in the West Jefferson Hills School District, their parents, other adults and clergy gathered to peacefully protest the death of George Floyd, but also protested a Snapchat video taken by middle schools students in the district over the weekend mocking the death of Mr. Floyd.
In the Snapchat video, one child is seen putting his neck on another with the other on the ground saying he couldn’t breathe.
The protesters say those actions do not represent the district and that is not who that are.
The protest happened at the Southland Shopping Center in Pleasant Hills.
About 200 Protesters stood along Route 51 holding up signs that say “Black Lives Matter” and more. Several cars honked their horns in support of the students with one State Police vehicle also acknowledging the crowd.
Jefferson Hills Police Chief Brian Finnerty, A PA State Police Corporal out of uniform, students and others spoke at the event.
One of those speakers was organizer and parent of a student in the district, Hillary Williams-Hilton
She said minority students have not been listened to in a long time.
Some businesses boarded up their windows the protest remained peaceful.
Demonstrators then made their way home around 2 p.m.
