PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Pittsburgh and the surrounding area beginning Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and will continue until Sunday at 10 a.m.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh predicts 4-9 inches to fall along with an accumulation close to one tenth inch of ice.
AccuWeather Meteorologist Elliot Abrams tells Larry and John snow will start falling during the late morning.
“At the height of the storm, at the end of the afternoon (Saturday) evening, it could get just warm enough aloft that it changes over to sleet, freezing rain and rain.”
If that happens we’ll get that 4-9 inches, if the storm doesn’t change over to rain, expect a foot of snow in Pittsburgh.
If ice does fall, Abrams doesn’t think it will be a major cause of power outages saying the temperatures will be right around freezing.
“If (the storm) changes over to rain it’s getting just warm enough that it’s barely below freezing at ground level and so it’s not really sticking to that many surfaces. It’s getting somewhat icy but it’s not like an ice storm at 20 degrees.”
AccuWeather also says that the change for more than 6 inches of snow is at about 50 percent and the chance for less than 3 inches is 4 percent.
