PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The beaches of Normandy were invaded 75 years ago on Thursday. Known as D-Day it is the biggest military operation in the history of the world.
One of the soldiers who was a part of that invasion, Veteran Joe Folino, joined KDKA Radio on Thursday to explain what he experienced on that fateful day.
“We landed on Utah Beach because the terrain was more level and they could get the tanks and heavy artillery off,” Folino explains.
Most of the action was on Omaha Beach, so Folino was not under heavy fire.
“The most we feared was artillery because you didn’t know where they were going to hit. You could see them going over and you could hear them, but you didn’t know where they were going to land,” Folino said.
75 years later, the World War II Veteran remembers all of the soldiers who risked their lives on June 6, 1944.
Per capita, Western Pennsylvania is an area that had a large number of vets serve in WWII.
