(Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Did President Donald Trump float the idea of dropping a nuclear bomb on a hurricane to help prevent it from reaching U.S. shores to security officials?

According to news website Axios, he did but the president tweeted Monday that notion in "ridiculous".

The story by Axios that President Trump wanted to blow up large hurricanes with nuclear weapons prior to reaching shore is ridiculous. I never said this. Just more FAKE NEWS!

The idea of using nuclear weapons to disrupt a hurricane is not a new one and goes back to the 1950s.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Lee Hendricks tells KDKA Radio  the possibility is not realistic.

He says all you have to do is look at the Marshall Islands and the nuclear tests they did there in the 1950s.

"They ended up having far more contamination of (the) islands in the area than they ever expected," said Hendricks. "I thinks someone actually saw the results of what they expected to happen and what really happened and decided maybe (using nuclear weapons) isn't such a good idea."

The United States is in hurricane season until the end of November.
