PITTSBURGH (Newsradio KDKA) - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings continues to rule over the slow September box-office. Expect that to change this week as three big titles open in wide release and kick off what could be a very strong October. Venom: Let There Be Carnage, The Many Saints of Newark and The Addams Family 2.
The rest of October looks spectacular. The much anticipated and oft-delayed 007 installment No Time to Die opens on October 8. Ridley Scott's The Last Duel is locked in on October 15, starring Matt Damon and a new Michael Meyers/Lamie Lee Curtis showdown Halloween Kills. Sci-fi spectacular Dune opens on October 22 along with Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (PG-13)
Starring: Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams
Tom Hardy is back as Eddie Brock and the alien protector Venom. The follow-up to the 2018 Venom finds our complex heroes battling Woody Harrelson's Cletus Kasady/Carnage. The Sony/Marvel production was originally scheduled to be released October 2, 2020 and then pushed to June 21, 2121. Landing a year after the initial opening shouldn't affect the box-office bottom line as Venom(2108) found new life with a second successful cable run. Michelle Williams reprises her role as Anne.
The Many Saints of Newark (R)
Starring: Alessandro Nivola, Michael Gandolfini and Vera Farmiga
Saints is the feature-film prequel to one of the most popular and beloved television series of all time. Set in 1967 Newark, young Tony Soprano (Michael Gandolfini, son of James) is growing into a man surrounded by the family and friends that made him the mobster with a heart that we've come to know and love. Narrated by Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Impierioli) who ironically was killed by the hands of Tony Soprano himself. Molisanti's father Dickie (Alessandro Nivola) was the biggest influence on young Tony's life as we watch the building of tv's favorite mob boss.
The Addams Family 2 (PG)
Starring: Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron and Chloe Grace Moretz
Everyone's favorite spooky family is back in the animated comedy sequel. The Addams Family 2.
In this installment we find Morticia (Charlize Theron) and Gomez (Oscar Isaac) distraught that their children are growing up, skipping family dinners and totally consumed with "scream time." To reclaim their bond they decide to cram Wednesday (Chloe Grace Moretz), Pugsley, Uncle Fester and crew into their haunted camper and hit the road for one last miserable family vacation. Their adventure across America takes them out of their element and into hilarious run-ins with their iconic cousin, It, as well as many new kooky characters. (MGM)
