PITTSBURGH (Newsradio KDKA) - Dune "spiced" up the box office with a prediction topping showing, bringing in a $40.1 million domestic debut. This week, closing out October and Halloween weekend, we are offered up two horror films that are unique in style and substance and offer the opportunity to be entertained in an old genre but in a fresh and enjoyable way. We'll discuss whether these films are tricks or treats on the KDKA Morning Show this Friday at 7 a.m.

Last Night in Soho (R)

Starring: Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy

Edgar Wright (Baby Driver) presents his latest masterpiece of a film, directing and writing Last Night in Soho. The story of an aspiring fashion designer who is mysteriously able to enter the 1960's where she encounters a dazzling wannabe singer. The glamour is not all it appears to be and the dreams of the past start to crack and splinter into something darker.

This psychological thriller is lifted by strong performances by McKenzie and Taylor-Joy and will keep you locked-in and riveted the entire run time. Soho is one of the most unique horror films I've ever seen. Wrights use of music stands out as an outstanding co-star much the same way that he blended the notes and beats of the sound track with incredibly complicated choreography in Baby Driver.

Antlers (R)

Starring: Keri Russell

A middle-school teacher and her sheriff brother become embroiled with her enigmatic student whose dark secrets lead to terrifying encounters with a legendary ancestral creature from the past. Set in an isolated Oregon, director Scott Cooper approaches this horror offering differently than most other films we've seen this year.

This week on the KDKA Morning Show with Larry and Kevin I'll talk about the different approach that Cooper takes with this film and why it's so impactful.

John Mowod, Mowod On Movies, reviews these releases with Larry Richert and Kevin Battle of the KDKA Radio Morning Show. Tune into 100.1 FM or AM 1020 KDKA at 7:05 every Friday morning for more in-depth movie news, reviews and movie trivia.
