Demand for gasoline should be high this summer as people start to travel again.
Expect prices to go up, but not because there won't be enough gas.
The shortage will be in tanker truck drivers to get gas to the pumps. For example, stats from the National Tank Truck Carriers Association show more trucks going unused this year.
"They normally have about 10% of trucks sitting idle in any given year and this year, there's somewhere between 20 and 25% of tank trucks that are parked because of a lack of drivers," said Rebecca Oyler with the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association.
She says during the COVID-19 pandemic, older drivers at high risk left and didn't come back and at the same time training and testing of new drivers slowed down.
Oyler says the industry must do a better job attracting younger drivers.
"For instance, the average age of a commercial truck driver is 55. We have to bring new and younger people into the profession and part of that's going to be making the job more attractive."
Many companies are increasing pay and time off, recognizing top performers and using technology in the truck to improve the driving experience.
